Color grading is one of the most time-intensive parts of post, and also one where the tedious, repeatable parts — shot matching, skin tone consistency, sky replacement masks — are exactly what AI handles well. The creative decisions (the grade's emotional intention, the color palette of a world) remain a colorist's craft. The hours of technical correction before the creative pass can now happen in a fraction of the time.
DaVinci Resolve 19 has the most mature AI color toolset in a production-grade NLE, and much of it is free. Third-party tools like Colourlab AI and Topaz add specialist capabilities on top.
DaVinci Resolve's AI color tools
Magic Mask uses AI to isolate subjects — faces, bodies, objects — without rotoscoping. You click the subject, and the mask tracks it through a shot automatically. Combined with the Color Warper and qualifier tools, this makes targeted adjustments (warm the skin, cool the background, darken the sky) dramatically faster than manual masking.
Scene-to-scene color matching in Resolve's Color page uses AI to analyze the color statistics of a reference frame and match a target shot to it — the foundational operation for continuity within a scene. Group grading then applies corrections to a whole scene simultaneously. For a feature-length project, these tools together can cut the primary correction pass from days to hours.
Colourlab AI: look matching and analysis
Colourlab AI analyzes your footage and a reference image (a film still, a movie frame, a photographer's image) and generates a LUT that pulls your footage toward that reference. The tool is not a one-click grade — it produces a starting point that a colorist then refines. But the starting point is dramatically closer to the target than a blank node tree, and the analysis correctly separates luma, saturation and hue rather than applying a flat transform.
Topaz Video AI for acquisition enhancement
Before you can grade footage, it sometimes needs to be rescued. Topaz Video AI's noise reduction and upscaling models work on footage shot in difficult conditions — high ISO, old cameras, archival material — and produce a cleaner starting point for the colorist. The upscaling models are particularly useful for mixed-format projects where some material was shot at a lower resolution than the deliverable spec.
Adobe Premiere and After Effects AI color
Lumetri Color in Premiere Pro includes AI-assisted auto-color and white balance detection. After Effects' Neural Filters include colorization for black-and-white archival footage and style transfer. These are not as powerful as Resolve's toolset but are useful for editors who live in the Adobe ecosystem and want AI assistance without switching apps.
